ABOUT US
The mission of ELS is to promote and sustain a literary and media culture in the eastern Nigerian heartland of Enugu and to support the creation of similar societies all over the southeast in particular, and Nigeria in general, as part of our contribution to the building of a progressive, stable, and democratic Nigeria.
Founded in 2016 by ASHOKA Fellow and SlamMaster, Ken Ike Okere (Founder of Eko Literary Society® in Lagos; and co-founder Abuja Literary Society®) and Grand Slam Champion, Dike Chukwumerije (founder of Simply Poetry®), ELS brings together resident and visiting writers, poets and spoken word artistes, critics and essayists, students and scholars, visual and performance artist(e)s, as well as literary enthusiasts in the serene cosmopolitan city of Enugu, South East Nigeria and environs.
ELS undertakes special projects, such as: school literacy campaigns, media literacy campaigns (such as the 2021 Project Fact Check Nigeria), libraries set up (such as Eastern Library project); democracy enlightenment campaigns, arts concerts, etc.
The Literary Society’s regular monthly/weekly activities include: open mic. poetry sessions, book readings (BookJam), book discussions, literary workshops, guest author hangout, among others.
